What Makes Fern Canyon Special

Fern Canyon is a narrow slot canyon carved into the coastal bluffs of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park near the town of Orick, about 20 miles south of Klamath. The canyon walls are blanketed from top to bottom in five-fingered ferns, horsetails, and mosses, creating a layered green environment unlike anything most visitors have seen. Getting to Fern Canyon

Fern Canyon is accessed via Davison Road, which turns off Highway 101 near Orick. The road is unpaved, about 5 miles long, and runs through Gold Bluffs Beach before reaching the Fern Canyon trailhead. A high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended. In dry summer conditions, some low-clearance vehicles can manage, but the road crosses seasonal streams and can be deeply rutted after rain.

No RVs or trailers are permitted on Davison Road due to width and surface restrictions. During winter and spring, the road can be closed or severely degraded. Check current conditions with the park before making the drive, especially outside of the June through September window. The National Park Service website and the park visitor center in Orick have up-to-date road conditions.

The Fern Canyon Trail

The Fern Canyon loop trail is approximately one mile in length and is considered easy to moderate in difficulty. The main challenge is the creek crossings. Wooden footbridges are installed in summer, but even with them, expect to get your feet wet if there has been recent rain. Water shoes or sandals that can get wet are a practical option in summer.

The loop takes most hikers 45 minutes to an hour to complete, though many people spend more time than that photographing the canyon walls and exploring the creek. You can extend your time by combining the Fern Canyon loop with a portion of the James Irvine Trail, which adds significant mileage and leads through old-growth redwood forest back toward the Prairie Creek visitor area.

Fees and Permits

There is a day-use fee for Gold Bluffs Beach, which you drive through to reach Fern Canyon. The fee is collected at the entrance kiosk. The America the Beautiful annual pass is accepted and covers the fee for vehicles. There is no separate fee specifically for Fern Canyon itself.

Note that during peak summer season, particularly on weekends, the parking area at Fern Canyon can fill up early in the day. Arriving before 10am significantly improves your chances of finding a spot without a long wait. The park does not currently operate a timed-entry permit system for Fern Canyon, though this could change in future seasons.

What to Bring

Water and snacks are important, as there are no facilities at the Fern Canyon trailhead. Wear shoes you do not mind getting wet. Bring layers, as the canyon environment stays cool and damp even in summer. A rain jacket is useful if there is any chance of precipitation.

A camera or good smartphone is worth having. The lighting inside the canyon is diffuse and beautiful in overcast conditions, which is common on the northern California coast. Direct sun creates harsh contrasts, so fog and cloud cover actually produce better photographs of the fern walls.

Best Time to Visit Fern Canyon

The best window for visiting Fern Canyon is June through September. Road conditions are most reliable, the creek is at its lowest, and wooden bridges are installed across the stream crossings. July and August are the busiest months. For a balance of accessibility and smaller crowds, aim for June or September.

Outside of summer, the canyon is still beautiful but access becomes less reliable. The creek can run much higher in winter and spring, making crossings difficult or impossible. The road may be closed entirely after heavy storms. If you are visiting in the off-season, check road conditions before you go.

Stay at Ravenwood Motel for Easy Access

Ravenwood Motel in Klamath is approximately 20 minutes north of the Davison Road turnoff for Fern Canyon. Staying here means you can time your arrival at the canyon for early morning, when parking is available and the light inside the canyon is often at its best. You are also well-positioned to combine a Fern Canyon visit with Gold Bluffs Beach and a drive through Prairie Creek Redwoods on the same day.
